“The universe started with a Big Bang roughly around 13.75 billion years ago, 4.5 Billion years ago our sun was formed and the earth was formed near about the same time. For about 3.5 Billion years life on earth means single-celled organisms, they evolved, and dinosaurs came and ruled the planet. They died too. Now the earth was occupied by mammals, followed by the age of apes, and finally came humans. You see we made such advancement that was never achieved by anything that came before us. The industrial revolution, Atomic Age, Digital Age, Information Age. But do you what will happen?” He posed a question to me.
I shrugged. I couldn’t even gather the energy to reply to him in words.
“It will all come to an end. In a billion years the sun will bloat and become a giant red star, and the life on the planet would die if not perished before because of our stupid decisions. All the stars will die and the universe will die too.” He finished his lecture on science.
“Listen, Bro, I don’t know all that. All I know is I converted this code into Java and now it is throwing a DB connection error. Will you please look into this and close it?” I almost started begging him for his attention to the matter at hand.
“No!! Bro. It doesn’t bother you? That all this will be meaningless when you look at it from the perspective of the universe.” The dude was still stuck on this question.
“No, It doesn’t what bothers me is that you are having an existential crisis right when we need you to solve a problem that shouldn’t be a problem in the first place. Come on now and check the code.” I replied almost raising my voice a few decibels from the necessary volume.
A minute passed without a single word, he was checking the code as he should be and I was busy drafting a report for this incident.
“Done.” He replied the next minute pointing me to the code and gesturing me to run and verify it.
“Yes, it's working,” I replied showing him a thumbs up.
I sent a detailed report on the incident. And locked my laptop.
“Break??” I asked him if he would like to join me for a puff of a cigarette.
No words were exchanged till we entered the smoking area.
“Why are you thinking all that nonsense?” I asked him while lighting the cigarette. The break time would last as long as the cigarette.
“What is the purpose of all this when everything eventually will die?” He started blurting nonsense again while pointing to the surrounding.
“Don't know, and don't care.” I passed the cigarette to him. And I release all that tension in the air along with the white smoke cloud.
“How can It not? If you look at the timeline we are not even equal to a speck.?” He continued with his story about the universe.
“Agreed. We are not significant in the timeline of the universe.” I replied getting back the cigarette from him. “But, you are wrong. You are trying to measure something was scale very small almost insignificant. Let me answer your question with another question. How many of your lifetimes would it take for you to see the end of the universe?”
He pulled out his android device and started punching in numbers. This is one of his best qualities. His way of thinking. Most people would directly say a million or billion or a gazillion or some random number but he is a special type of crazy.
“Factoring in the avg Indian guy’s lifespan, I would say 50.4 Million lifetimes.” He replied proudly.
“Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. You are not even close. Sorry to break it to you, but you only get one life. And get to walk on earth once and when you die it is over. If you believe in reincarnation, in that case also the lifetime will not be yours. You are looking at things on the wrong scale. In the scale of the universe, you may not be equal to a speck but when you zoom into scale you will find yourself there.” I dragged another puff.
“Let me put it this way, the dinosaur walking the planet was the past, And the sun dying in billions of years is the future. But we are living in the present and we need to make sure that we are living it correctly.” I tried my best to explain to him in a hope that he returns to normal.
“I guess. You do have a point.” He replied. But his answer lacked confidence.
“I am not sure about being a speck on the universe but we will surely be turned to dust if we fail to submit the data for the presentation before the signoff.” I put out the cigarette and started walking back to the desk.
