The way the Government is talking the deal is already done. Good for Spurs, but very bad news for South Africa.
Over the last few days the general public in South Africa have heard about an imminent sponsorship deal with Tottenham Hotspur Football club. The deal is for the sleeve of the shirt advertising South Africa as a tourist destination.
Arsenal have a similar type sponsorship with Rwanda costing a reported £30 million per season so this idea is nothing new. A few years back the government thought is was a good idea to spend R22 million on a giant flag which was shouted down before it could happen.
There is no sense of reality spending this type of money as £50 million is 1 Billion Rand when the country is a disaster zone. The president is about to announce a State of Emergency due to the electricity crisis which is all self inflicted.
Self inflicted as in no investment to maintenance costs is ever considered until those important parts of the infrastructure start to break. When things start to break it is already to late to maintain them as they realistically need replacing.
Yesterday we had 10 hours of no power and today we are having 8 hours of power cuts yet the tourism board thinks it is a good idea to attract tourists. The South African infrastructure is crumbling all around us as even the roads are not safe for travel. The National road between Johannesburg and Durban called the N3 I refuse to travel anymore as it is that dangerous having too many close calls on the last journey. I will fly, but I will not do the 5 hour drive and I have an advanced drivers licence.
Crime is on the increase and any tourist would be seen as a soft target like those poor Germans who were hijacked a few months back outside the Kruger Game Park where one tourist was murdered. Things have not changed since then and have deteriorated.
I understand this advertising sponsorship deal is to attract more tourists as they would like to help boost the local travel industry which will boost taxes. Cape Town is the only place tourists will be heading along with a safari as that is what the majority do. The Johannesburg to Cape Town air traffic route is the second busiest in the world and already there are not enough panes due to South African Airways struggling after business rescue. SA is in no condition to increase the tourism industry right now and need to fix all the broken infrastructure before embarrassing South Africa anymore.
