Thoughts from a messy desk at 7:41 am

in #hive-161155last year

It's the first time in almost three years since I spend all night working. I used to pull all-nighters all the time back in college where I used to have a full time job while enrolling in 7-10 courses per semester only to finish faster - the normal workload was 5-6 courses -, and I guess I got addicted to a fast pace and an efficiency and productive mindset.

I stopped having this lifestyle when I began traveling. I traveled for 3 years non-stop, I went to more than 30 countries and experienced a lot. I was probably sleeping as much as I was in college but the motivation to do it was a totally different one, but the outcome was pretty much the same: I believe sleeping is wasting time.

Now, before you come up with the oh but anomad, we all need sleep, you are slowly killing yourself by having this lifestyle hear me out. I do sleep, and I love resting and being with a full battery on a new day or a new week, especially when the first of the month is a monday - I guess it's a psychological thing - but the thing is, I see sleeping time as a must or a need, not a pleasure or something I do because I want to.

Sleeping to me is like eating in a healthy way, meditating or exercising daily. I do each of those things because I know I have to, I do them because I understand that I need to in order to perform at my very best level. It's like my medicine.

Sleep time is a need, but like everything in life, if we hedonistically succumb to our needs and turn them into wants, then we are dangerously threading on a thin line where pleasure, self indulgence and apathy can take over the wheels of our life.

I've been getting a lot less sleep time later, but I'm loving every second of it. I'm not sleeping less because I want to, but because I have to. I recently had a huge change in my life that is keeping me up from 11pm to 5 am.

Instead of playing vidya & chess or reading novels, I am taking this time that I have to stay awake, to work on myself. I am doing a lot of work for my job, learning more JavaScript and slowly getting into React and Python, and I'm trying to do more research on projects that promise or that have a ton of potential.

I think I'm doing quite well in all of these fronts.

The social side of Leo is kicking ass, I am learning much more programming - to me, night time is the best to learn by the way - and I recently made a 500 dollar investment that is already 50x up.

Nice, isn't it?

I have no idea if I would be where I am right now if I hadn't start with this lifestyle and mindset where I use the nights to be as productive as I can be instead of mindlessly watching series or playing video games whenever I have to stay up at night.

I remember that back when I was traveling I was constantly volunteering in hostels to sustain my cheap lifestyle and extend my traveling time. When there was a night shift available and there was no party in the horizon, I would take it just to be able to have all that time to work on myself. You see, night time in hostels is basically checking that every guest arrives, making sure they are not too loud while eating away their drunkness, being there if a guest has any question which is literally 10 minutes per night, and just doing some small tasks that take no more than 1 hour. That used to leave me 6 full hours to do stuff for myself.

I am rambling, perhaps it is because I've been awake for 24 hours and out of those, like 16 have been in front of my desk, maybe I do need my sleep medicine right now.

By the way, this is the featured desk, do you like it? I know, it's messy as fuck but that's what I get after so much productive time with no cleaning time in between.

What about you? When are you more productive?

Sort:

A messy desk is a productive desk! You know your body best and I agree about more sleep than necessary is wasteful. Early morning is my most productive time but in the past I did a stint as a 3rd shift floor super in a factory. I always seemed to get more done during those overnight hours.

I like to say that to myself all the time, but the truth is that a clean desk makes me feel more organized in the head lol, but I can't help it! That job sounds interesting for some blogs by the way :D

Nights always, less distractions both online and offline which allows me to stay focused.

I seem to be like 3x more efficient at night. The home office setup has a lot of advantages, but not getting distracted is not one of them lol

I met someone many years ago who said the same thing about sleeping, that it's sad to be sleeping like 30-40% of our lifespan so she would be up most of the nights doing things and being productive. Glad to read that you do the same and that it's yielding you great benefits - learning, earning and others too.

I don't think I'll do it so often though, the toll it takes on our bodies is too big especially once you are over 30. What we can do is to maximize the productivity and efficiency during those times we are awake. Thanks for dropping by!

I can relate, feeling like a zombie when sleeping late on successive nights and it affects the performance during the day. So yes, better to not do it often. That you too and have an awesome day :)

Pulling off all-nighters can usually mean three things:

  1. You are unproductive.
  2. You screwed something up.
  3. You have a health issue.

I guess you are in the 2nd group, perhaps mixed in with a little bit of the 1st. Personally, I am in the 4rd group and it's not fun. Despite having a good night sleep right now, I am sightly jaded and around 70% alert, but it's ok if nothing happens the rest of the day. My medication for today so far was:

  • 60mg of Ritalin
  • 400mg caffeine pills
  • 2 liters of espresso
  • 1 liter of cola light
  • plenty of nicotine

Bottom line: If you need some advise from a professional, just ask. :-)

I'm screwed up, but I also have an outside factor for which I need to stay awake so I use that time to be productive, hopefully it won't be long until I can come back to my normal schedule.

Thanks for the professional advice!

There is no way to deceive nature, the night is for rest, but I deceive nature when I study myself I am so productive at night. I stayed awake almost every night to change my life. But one thing is common. I always sleep from 9am to 2pm in the morning to recharge myself again.

I see a massive error

Lol in the desk, or where?

None should be at that desk 7.41am, it's too early - you might die.

It's cool to see that someone it's doing something productive in their time at nights. I usually feel more productive at nights, too. But lately I've been struggling with the fact that I don't feel productive at all. No matter what I do, it's like I'm doing nothing. Maybe it's because I don't have the tools to do what I want to do, but I still stay awake at nights.

It wasn't always like this though, at one point in my life I used to stay up all night playing vidya and watching crappy series, I guess time makes us wise hahaha.

What are you striving to do during the night that you just can't?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Well, I would like to do some graphic design, or some coding things, but my PC is a little bit old (14 years old) and I just can't do what I want to do.

i'm definitely more productive at night

Night Lions ftw!

I would love to have a messy desk like that you displayed in the picture. I can say that now, when I wrote those lines, my desk is clean. The reason is that I don't check and consider what lies on the floor (books, piles of papers, empty boxes, full boxes, etc.).

What about you? When are you more productive?

I can be productive mostly anytime, but I am most productive when commuting to work by train (2h of my time per day). There, I am in my bubble and I could take the luxury to ignore the entire planet. Then comes working from home, and finally working from work. I know it looks awkward, but that's the truth. Productivity is inversely proportional to the amount of in-person interactions with people (at least for me).

Cheers!

For some reason if I pick up the computer the first thing when I get up, I just get shit doneeee.

I wouldn't even say that I'm a morning person, but it just happens that way.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is always very early in the morning or late at night when I get most of my shit done, 80/20 I guess, but I have learned and between 2pm and 6pm I do the easy tasks on the computer and take some time to do house chores and some gardening, so far, very efficient.

All well and good til you burn out which is no fun for anyone.

Or start having interesting memory issues in twenty years.

Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything >_>

You are getting an adequate to good amount though right? RIGHT?! :D

Your desk looks positively spartan compared to mine XD

Definitely, I want to avoid burning out because getting out of that state is hard as hell and you end up losing more valuable time trying to than what you would've wasted sleeping.

The memory part is scary as hell, iirc I read that bad sleep and dementia are correlated... but I still think I'm getting enough sleep every day to avoid having long term consequences hahaha

Lol at the desk part, here I am thinking it looks like hell on earth and you come telling me yours is messier???? :P

Yep.

And yep I remember reading that too which is why I'm even more scared XD Part of my memory issues are probably adhd-related, and I'm pretty sure the rest is brain damage from a fall onto my head when I was 9-11 and then staying up for 7-8 days in a row when I was 18-19 (don't do that). And I'm really, really not helping myself because while I KNOW everything I tell everyone else, I'm still trying to cram in as much as I can (my project has a ridiculous amount of work to do) so I still end up going to bed late and getting woken up early x_x

Good that you're getting enough sleep :D (we hope!)

Yes mine is messier. Yours is very neat and spartan by comparison XP It's actually messier than I usually let it get as I've been using it as temporary storage while deep cleaning the room it's in and because it's relatively out of the way and doesn't bother me I have yet to get around to tidying all that up. It's hard to see most of the actual desk at the moment.

Much the same with sleep of late except not able to sit behind a computer screen for extensively long hours, I find things to do that keeps one active in hours when others sleep their lives away.

Stepping into coding and learning something new well worthwhile, I have tried to direct my sons down that path over the years, it takes time and dedication.

Good to see you back after some time, have an amazing day and keep the desk in disarray you know where to find whatever you need from memory...

I had to buy an ergonomic chair and set alarms just so I be reminded of stretching, so I hear ya haha

Coding is not for everyone, I decided to learn because I was always good at math and logic but if they are more into creativity and business they will hate every day of coding (even though the money is stupid good, which is why I got into it).

Thanks for the comment and dropping by Joan!

Can never go wrong if you have found coding that excites you to write, test then apply.

When schools (before internet arrived) did not have competent teachers in Maths many pupils lost interest which you hear of all too often.

Have a wonderful day.

It can get addictive... once you pass through the initial "tired phase" and then get that second wind, which often has you feeling more productive than when you first wake up. However, the "comedown" that inevitably follows ain't great...

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The worst part is that once you pass that tired phase you can't fall asleep for a few hours, so either you time it right or prepare to be able to sleep from 10am to 3pm rofl

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Exactly, once the second wind kicks in there's no going back... you're not sleeping...

I am probably more productive when I am sitting in my office at work. I have a hard time working from home. Covid was rough for me. I just didn't feel like I was getting a much done as I do when I am here. Probably because I get pulled away more to do stuff with my wife and dog at home, so I can't really complain, but it just felt different. Man, if you consider that a messy desk, you should come see mine!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The home office scheme is super positive and helpful in many aspects, being able to not get distracted is not one of them lol

I hear ya on the wife and pets, I'm pretty much the same to the point where we have a do not disturb times otherwise I wouldn't get anything done.

Rofl at the desk, I guess I am not as bad as I thought, many comments saying they beat the shit out of my mess lol

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, you are actually pretty organized! I loved having the extra time to spend with my wife, but it would definitely be a mindset shift for me to do that every single day. It would take me a while to get into that shared headspace.
