From Incompetency To Proficiency - My Amateur Days

One thing I've always loved to do from childhood is writing, no joke... I enjoyed writing stories as much as I enjoyed reading different kinds of stories back then. Dad was very supportive of this skill of mine but then, I was not good at it at all. I remember a few years back when I came across some stories I wrote when I was still a kid and I couldn't stop laughing at myself for how silly and childish they were.

It didn't end there... I tried writing after a long while again

Thanks to so many factors of life I encountered, I stopped writing for sometime (that is, I became a teenager) and then I started to write again. Not good writings but I was lucky to have a neighbour who would teach us a lot about how to write and spell when he is bored at home... His boredom became my learning time and I can't stop being grateful for that.

He would allow us write our stories and he reads to make corrections. I can still remember the number of times I got bad on my stories because of lack of continuations and wrong spellings. That didn't make me give up though because he didn't fail to acknowledge my beautiful handwriting haha... More than a motivation if you ask me.

Some days, I would feel so elated when I have good ideas for my writings and he wouldn't fail to encourage me to pen them all into a paper but some days, he goes too harsh on me simply because I kept repeating some mistakes over and over. I'm not one of those fast learners but when I know something, it sticks very well... That paid off for my writing skill.

Thanks to his teachings back then, I still have old stories I could go back to read that still surprises me (I'll be like "Did I write this at that age?") but then another long break from writing came in again although I wrote during normal school studies but no training for any improvement.

Until I found online blogging which led me to Hive...

My first days at the first blogging platform I found wasn't easy at all, I felt like a baby who was trying to understand what "Forming a sentence that makes sense" means. I still remember getting sanctioned for plagiarism as I thought I could borrow some words to make things easier for me but I learnt the hard way. It led me to meet some good writers who put me through to write better.

From then till now, I'm still writing and I don't think I'll be stopping anymore because it has become a part of me with everyday improvement. Joining Hive and blending in wasn't hard at all because of the training I had from the other platform, I just simply put all I've learned into good use and it's been paying off for me.

Tips I could gather from my amateur days

untitled.gif

  • It's always a slow process to grow well and it requires consistency to be faster than slow.
  • It gets easier by every action made for improvement, hardwork will always pay.
  • Having those who believe in what you can do goes a long way in sharpening your skill.
  • Taking corrections easily and putting to practice is a fast way to improve.
  • Never stop learning, the world is evolving and you've got to follow it's trend.

You could get more tips from my amateur days story, but I'd like to stop at these five. I'm still learning to be a better writer than I am now and I'm glad Hive has provided a daily means for me to do that.

If there's something I'm still an amateur at... It is singing

People may say I sing very well but I know too well that I have a lot of things to improve on with my voice and I plan to get there somehow and someday. Like the tips I've given, it's a slow process and I'm willing to enjoy it to being proficient in my singing alongside my writing.

Hehe, you better come for singing proficiency.
I will train you very well, so you have been camouflaging us with your charming voice on Hive open mic since these days.

You are doing well dear, still following your leads anyway 😄😄😄

Lol which one is single Proficiency again 😂😂

Thanks for thinking my voice is charming 😊

Keep following my lead o, just don't shout when we kick any stone 😂

Singing proficiency
If you are leading, both of us cannot jam a stone haba.
Follow who knows the road

😂😂😂
Wahala o
This high mountain you're placing me on, it's too high o

The sky is the starting point, we are still moving

Having a neighbor like that is a blessing. Not everyone has that privilege.
Also, all thanks to hive too for the privilege to learn more.

Another thing is that learning never ends. The world keeps evolving and things keep changing. There is a need for us to learn more and stay update always.

#dreemport brought me here

That's right, I was lucky to have such a blessing in a person back then.

Thanks for stopping by

My pleasure😉

I can tell you have improved very well with your writing and this is as a result of you dedicating time to learn and give room for growth.

About the song, there is room for development truly but you have a magical voice.

Awww your words are motivating me to be better hehe
Thanks 🙂

The funny thing about writing skills, is the ability to be consistent about it, the more you write, the better you become.

I remember when I was a kid i enjoyed writing poems a lot, no matter how ridiculous they sound my late grandmother always wants to listen to the poems. Which serves as an encouragement for me.

Writing is fun on hive, as long as you understand three rules

  • No plagiarism
  • Quality content
  • Consistent engagement

Thanks for sharing

Oh my! I love the tips you added at the end of your comment, would be very useful to newbies 😊

Thanks for popping in hehe

Never stop learning indeed. And never stop doing that thing which you are good at. Because no matter how good you are, if you leave it for an extended period of time, you'll get rusty.

You've done well indeed.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Indeed, thanks for that addition
I'm honoured to have you stop by

I've heard you sing. You're awesome! I also loved righting right through from childhood. I stumbled across a preteen romance novel I tried to right. Oh. My. God. It was TERRIBLE 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lol I can imagine... I was shocked to see one of my worst stories from back then too 😅

But I valued the memories it gave me

It was dedicated to my best friend at the time, who ironically is an incredible author now

Oh my! I love that... You must be proud of your friend 😊

I am 😊😊😊😊

It’s kinda inspiring to learn that you did not go through any form of formal training to become this better.

I personally wouldn’t have thought that you did not study how to write in the university or through some online courses. That’s how excellent your writings are to me.

Regardless, I think there’s still more to explore.
I’m very grateful meeting you here. I personally have a lot to learn from you. I hope you keep them coming!!!

Okay, now that's some motivating comment from my new friend 🥰

I'm glad you find my write ups that good even though I think I'm far from better haha

I could teach you all I know but one step at a time... No rush, you're doing great already.

It’s great to know that I’m already in your good books. I appreciate that. 🙏🏿

I’m also happy to know that you’re ready to lend me a hand. A friend indeed 🥰

Thank you soo much for your kind words. You’re soo kind 🤗

You're welcome 🥰

🥰🥰🥰

but you have a nice voice dear, maybe you are like me who needs everything to be perfect before i can praise myself 😅

Lol that's the thing my dear... We dey together 😅

Hehehehehehe

How does someone teach out of boredome? Lol I’d rather do the opposite. Glad I wasn’t him then or many people never would’ve gotten to read the awesome stuff you publish. About that writing…You’ll have to show us🙂

Lol thinking about it now, it was definitely when he had nothing to do he gathered the kids around to teach them 😅

He was amazing unlike you 😝
And no! You're not seeing the writing... Sorry ehn

And no! You're not seeing the writing... Sorry ehn

Pretty please?

Haha I almost fell for that 😅
